These tips are all about documenting Day in the Life:
This week for #nndailytip, we're talking about Day in the Life. Inspired by @aliedwards, I document a DITL once a month. You can also do a few times a year like Ali does. My biggest tip is to not pick your day. There isn't a such thing as a typical day, but doing this exercise will change the way you document. I loved playing along in Ali's group days at first and I love using the same date each month throughout the year now (chosen by a random number generator). When the days aren't "typical," like this Independence Day DITL spread, I end up documenting how I get ready for special events and more behind the scenes. Don't wait to capture normal, just tell the story of a day! #dayinthelife #pocketyouryear
This week #nndailytip is all about Day in the Life. Make sure you get photos of yourself going about your day–the self timer on your phone or camera is a great tool to use! Use a mini tripod for your phone (I use a Gorillapod), prop your phone up / raise your camera up with a stack of books, or put your phone in an empty glass to stand it up. It might take you a few tries to get the angles right or to get photos of yourself that you are comfortable with, but you get better and faster the more often you do it!
I love including Day in the Life in my albums with a monthly pocket spread, but there are lots of different formats to try–digital pages, traditional layouts, and mini books are great options! My first year doing Day in the Life monthly (2013), I included DITL as a 6×12 insert in a weekly pocket spread using a template by @aliedwardsdesigninc #nndailytip
I end up with a lot of similar photos from doing Day in the Life monthly, like this family selfie in the car, which I have lots of versions of. I think these repetitions are an asset; I love seeing how we change over time. Don't think of going back to the same types of photos as a cop-out. Finding new ways to document things can be exciting, but returning to ideas has value too. #nndailytip
Doing Day in the Life? Set a reminder for yourself on your phone or calendar or write a note to yourself so you see it first thing. You'll give yourself time to charge your camera / phone batteries the day before and you'll remember to start documenting in the morning. If you forget, no big deal, just do the next day! (I forgot this month, so I did the 3rd instead of the 1st.) #nndailytip
What are your favorite Day in the Life tips? I’m recording one tomorrow, but it’s all about our foster daughter, so I won’t be sharing much. I’m planning on using one photo each hour to go with Ali Edward’s most recent Day in the Life kit! Find her Day in the Life supplies here.
