Welcome to the third Nerd Nest Challenge of the year! Join in for monthly memory keeping challenges on the first Monday of each month. Need extra inspiration? A Nerd Nest Creative Team member will be here every Monday with their takes on the challenge!
This month’s challenge is to document how you take a break.
Some ideas for this month’s challenge are to describe your favorite way to relax, where you go on Spring Break or on holiday (or where you went as a child), how you took a step back from an activity–maybe you took a break from a sport due to an injury, took a break from working for maternity leave, or took a break from a relationship to work things out, or some of your favorite methods of self care. However you take a break, I want to hear about it!
I’m looking forward to a little trip with my family for Eliza’s Spring Break this month, which had me reflecting on my childhood Spring Break trips.
So for my take on the challenge, I decided to begin to document the Colorado skiing trips I took with my aunt and grandparents.
I love using pocket pages to document stories with older photos, because I’m usually working with the only copy of the photo, and the pockets keep the photos safe.
I used a 3×4 card and 6×12 insert to begin telling my story, writing about my memories about the trips in general rather than focusing on the specific trip these photos represent. I’ll continue my journaling on other pages, and might move around the photos and journaling if I can dig up older pictures that represent earlier trips.
I included a ski lift pass from 2002. I attached it to the page with a brad so I wouldn’t damage it. Brads are a great way to add memorabilia that already has holes!
I also printed out a map I found of the resort we skied at, which I found online. The map is from 2016 and the trails have changed some since I was a kid, so I made sure to note that the map was updated.
If you are scrapping older trips and don’t have memorabilia or ephemera, you can usually find digital versions!
I loved documenting my favorite Spring Break memories from childhood, and I’m looking forward to recording new ones this month as well!
I’m also working on a page about how I take breaks when I’m stressed–remember there are lots of ways to interpret this challenge!
