Last year I played along with Ali Edward’s Day in the Life monthly and it was one of my favorite projects ever. This year, I’m repeating the project. On the 15th of each month, I’m going to document my everyday life. I chose to do this in the middle of the month this year instead of the end of the month like last year. This way I’ll get different holidays and will have an opportunity to more easily make a day up if I forget all about it. I also like having a set day because I won’t worry about finding a “representative” or “normal” day. Wherever the 15th falls, that’s what I’ll document.
And this one just happened to be crazy awesome. Here’s Saturday, March 15th!
Morning: I woke up before everyone else to a wonderful sunspot and a snuggling kitty. Our friends Megan 2 and Ryan stayed the weekend with us, and I snuck downstairs to make coffee while trying not to wake them up. I even went and ground the coffee in the bathroom so it wouldn’t be so noisy. We had a late night just staying up and talking (Paul was there for that part). They woke up anyway, and we sat around and talked, fixed Jonas breakfast, and then Jake woke up and distracted Jonas so Megan 2, Ryan, and I could walk to the The Filling Station for breakfast (Jonas LOVES it there).
Just hanging out and talking with Megan and Ryan is my favorite thing. I’ve missed Megan so much!
We lost track of time and had to rush to get ready for Planet Comicon so we wouldn’t miss the first panel we wanted to see at noon. Jake got the kids dressed so I could wash and brush my long, ridiculous hair (it’s a stupid amount of work just to brush it). Megan 2 helped with the brushing so it would be faster. And Jake tied my tie, because I don’t know how.
Afternoon: Today was really all about Planet Comicon. Parking was lucky (hurrah!) and the fun started before we even got inside (Jonas shared a moment with Alien). We got inside just in time to sneak into the back of the Jewel Staite panel. Being a little late was actually a good thing, because we were sitting against the back wall of the room and Jonas could literally roll around. She was hilarious and charming.
After that, we split up with Megan 2 and Ryan for a bit so they could go to a Deadpool panel while we waited for the Sylvester McCoy panel. We’re dedicated: we were in pretty much the front of the long, wrapping line. It was really fun to chat in line with other Whovians, Eliza and I (as Rose and a Lady 10) were among many other Who Cosplayers, which was rad. Where else can you talk to people off-Internet about things like knitting patterns for the 4th doctor’s scarf? While we waited, it was hard to keep Jonas entertained (he’s a runner). We played Blink, during which we get closer to him every time he closes his eyes and tickle him when we reach him. Eliza read Diary of a Wimpy Kid (which she’d like me to tell you is a good book to read while waiting for things). She also told me that she’d like to ask a question, so when Jake and Jonas sat down Eliza went straight for the question line with me.
Sylvester McCoy did the whole panel in character as the 7th Doctor, which was crazy amazing, and paced the room rather than staying up on the stage. So he walked past us more than a dozen times, even stopping to compliment Eliza’s shirt, and he played the spoons right in front of us. Eliza asked her question, “If you could be any other Doctor other than the 7th, which would you be?” He told her it was a very deep question and answered Patrick Troughton, because your first Doctor is always the one that stays with you. Then he came back to her and said, but you don’t know who that is, do you? I told him she knows the numbers and he said, “Two!” before moving on. She whispered to me, “That’s the one with the flute!” as he walked away. I could tell she had wanted to say that to him, just to prove she isn’t by default out-Whovianed just because she’s little. We sat back down and kept Jonas entertained with phone games for the rest of the time.
Next we had overpriced sandwiches, met back up with Megan 2 and Ryan for awhile, met more cosplayers (a Captain America with a handmade shield and helmet even let Jonas try both on), and did the floor. Jonas got his energy out dancing (he is so not afraid to learn from strangers and picked up a few new moves). A stormtrooper let Jonas shoot him and pretended to fall. Eliza was full on prancing. Then we did a lot more looking around at booths to pick what we’d each get. Jake and I picked up a signed print by Tony Moore, Eliza settled on a TARDIS plushie, and Jonas got a Dalek hat. We didn’t pick up any actual comic books this time, because that requires more in-depth looking than is possible with Jonas in tow. Megan and Ryan picked up some adorable prints for their nursery.
Evening: When we got back home we were all basically resigned to being in an exhaustion puddle. We chatted, snuggled, and watched some Mental Floss. It was late before we realized that hey–we should pick up some dinner–so Megan, Eliza, and I went to go pick up Po’s (which was actually Plan B; Plan A was too busy). We waited and talked there, and texted with Jonas, because Jake taught him to use voice recognition on the iPad. It was hilarious. I didn’t include the photo of Eliza and Megan at the restaurant, because it wasn’t approved by Eliza and she’s screening everything about her that goes online now (which is awesome). We ate in the living room rather than at the table so we could watch more nerdy You Tube stuff. Then Megan, Eliza, and I got into a serious conversation that was sparked by one of Eliza’s long, deep question strings. She’s learning about slavery in school, and wanted to know why it was black people who were slaves in America. So we talked about indentured servitude, ideas of racism, race as a social construct (which I grabbed my intro to sociology textbook to help illustrate), kidnapping and human trafficking, evolution and human adaptation of melanin, and more about the history of slavery and abolition in America. It was getting late, so I sent Eliza to bed with the promise that we’d learn more the next day. Jake and Jonas went upstairs and fell asleep half way through the conversation, and Megan had fallen asleep when I came back down after getting Eliza tucked away. So Ryan and I roused Megan enough to lower our couch into the pull out bed and I went and read White Oleander until I feel asleep.
That’s a day in the life at the Nerd Nest!
