Today is Eliza’s birthday! We’re celebrating with just us today, with our family this weekend, and with her friends in a few weeks (because we’re never going to be ready to throw a birthday party right after winter break). She’s one lucky kid to get to celebrate three times! I think birthdays are a great time to capture a bit of what someone’s life is like in the moment, so I documented some of the things that really characterize Eliza as she turns eight.
At Eight You…
…think that science and art are the best things ever.
…are so proud to speak French and love learning about Francophone cultures.
…can cook soufflés.
…love watching Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, Johnny Quest, and Jumanji.
…hate getting your hair brushed but won’t get it cut until it is long enough to donate.
…prefer defense on soccer and have the best time with the girls on your team.
…love reading: you read by yourself before bed, in the car, to your brother, and you also love having us read to you. You especially love Doctor Who books.
…have discovered the joy of video games. Right now it is Loco Roco on your PSP and a traffic game on our old (services-less) cell phone.
…get upset when you feel you’re not being heard out.
…pretty much only sleep in your room, the rest of the time you’re where the rest of the family is.
…won’t take off your hemp necklace, because you’re trying to beat dad’s two year record of not taking one off.
…are the best at playing with Jonas (even if you do shriek a lot because he’s messing up your stuff).
…are starting to take almost as many pictures as your parents.
…have had sleepovers with some of your best friends.
…make so much art we can’t keep up with it.
…like wearing “fancy” clothes when you
…think it’s cool to explore and document your findings.

…are pretty much the coolest kid around.
…are so very very loved.
