This year I’m playing along with Ali Edward’s Day in the Life. At the end of each month, I’ve been documenting our routine.
Here’s December 31!
Morning: The kids were at their grandparents in the morning, so I slept in until about 9:30. It was nice to be woken by the sun vs. Jonas or an alarm. I did a bit of blog work and blog reading over my morning coffee while watching the Walking Dead, then worked on projects in hyper drive to make up for the days I’d be on vacation. I did laundry all throughout the day. Lisa brought baby Ava over for awhile, and we chilled out for a few hours. I fed her and we played on the floor. It was nice to get to just focus on her without Jonas climbing all over us both! Lisa picked up Ava and we chatted for awhile.
Afternoon: During the afternoon I finished up my work, took a bunch of photos for blog posts, and painted my 2014 One Little Word. After hanging it I decided it doesn’t feel balanced, though, so I’m painting over it and trying again later this week.
Rita (Abba to the kids) brought the kids home. They were super excited to show me their new super ridiculous Nerf guns from their Uncle Corbin. I’m saying goodbye to everything breakable in the house now. Jonas played with his new Death Star Planetarium night light and Eliza checked on her Magic Rocks experiment (this one is similar).
Evening: After Jake got home, he played with the kids and we spent some of the evening packing for our Denver trip after I finished off the last of the laundry. We had leftover pizza from Jonas’s birthday party for dinner and watched the first episode of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland together. We like to keep New Year’s Eve chill since our holidays are so packed with family parties and the kids’ birthdays are both so close to Christmas. We got Jonas in bed earlyish, but Eliza wanted to stay up until midnight. She took the picture of Jake and I talking about my One Little Word. I read The Lord of the Rings while Jake played a video game and Eliza watched Jumanji (the cartoon) downstairs. I dozed off a bit, but we all got together for a kiss at midnight! We went to bed to rest up for our road trip on New Year’s.
I loved capturing a Day in the Life this year. Some of my favorite photos ever have come from the exercise, and it’s pushed me to document things I’d normally not take photos of, like our family eating together at the dinner table or unloading the dishwasher. It pushes me to pack a lot of information into short, informative journaling that really captures our routine, which seems mundane at the moment but changes drastically over time. It’s the best, and I highly, highly recommend giving it a try.
This year I’m definitely repeating the exercise (though I’ll probably change up the scrapbooking format a bit). Instead of documenting at the end of the month this year, I’m going to document in the middle of each month. This will ensure I’m documenting different holidays and will give me a little bit more wiggle room if I forget all about it on my designated day.
Did you do Day in the Life this year? How did it go for you?
