To document the holidays, I’m using my photo and journaling prompts from Daily Doc | Holiday Edition to document each day, inspired by Ali Edwards’s December Daily. I’m mixing and matching, and I’ve printed out the list at the end of the workbook to help me keep track / get ideas each morning. For prompt #3, I documented our tradition of Christmas tree trunk candle holders!
I decided on a bunch of see-through elements for this page. The ratio of the top-left photo would have forced me to cut off the top of the tree in the background to make it 3×4, so I decided to print the photo at slightly under 3 inches wide. Instead of mounting the photo on another surface, I slipped it into the pocket and left the extra space, so that the Christmas tree card on the next page would show through. I used a cork star sticker from the Studio Calico Jubilee kit (which I’m using throughout the base of this album) on the inside of the pocket to keep the photo from sliding around. I filled another pocket with acrylic stars and sealed it with gold star washi. There’s a blank pocket behind the pocket with the stars, so it will be fun to see how the look of this page changes when I complete the next page. I used circles punched from a We R Memory Keepers journaling card (I picked up a few pads of cards from them at Target and am using them throughout the album) to fill up some negative space, add a bit more information, and tie the pockets together.
Jake took these photos in super low light, and taught me some low-light manual focusing and color balance tricks with a tripod. These will come in handy in the coming it-gets-dark-too-early months! Though the techniques won’t be very useful for, say, photographing Jonas, who would be a blur.
The journaling reads:
“We turn the part of the trunk sawed off of our Christmas trees into candle holders. It is our third year doing it and they look so pretty all lit up together.”
To take the pressure off and give me plenty of time to complete each layout and photograph it in daylight, I’m sharing a day in this album every afternoon through the end of the year, two days after the day I document! To tune into the daily documenting with photos and words, follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Flickr. Find the rest of the album here.
