This week I’m participating in Ali Edwards’s Week in the Life, an in-depth weekly documentation project. I’m taking lots of photos and writing lots of words each day this week, focusing on a single family member each of the first four days, and then I’ll make a spread for each day to put in my Project Life album. Wednesday was all about me.
Jake and I take turns helping Eliza get ready in the mornings, and yesterday was Jake’s day. So I just got the fun part. It was really nice out in the morning, which was great after days of heat in the 90s and 100s, so we waited for her bus outside. She looked at her Doctor Who book and told me all about it.
After we got Eliza on the bus, Jonas and I went to pluck tomatoes! We moved them to a sunnier spot last week and now they’re producing much more. Jonas loves tending the garden, and gets SO super excited when he finally gets to pick something.
Also of note: we live in the city on the corner of a busy street, and we’re still out there in pajamas and a diaper. Do with that information what you will.
I checked my e-mail and posted a few social media things while Jonas and I waited on baby Ava to arrive. Then we got dressed and headed off to the grocery store. This is actually the first time I’ve taken Ava anywhere (other than on walks). Jonas is such a handful, I’m sort of scared to add her in the mix out in the world. Plus, I hate driving.
I stopped for a latte at The Filling Station on the way. In case my favorite barista didn’t think I was crazy before, he does now.
I didn’t get photos at the grocery store, but that went really well. We used one of those carts that have a car on the bottom of them, so Jonas had fun “driving” that in the beginning. He also helped pick things out, crossed things off the list on my phone (I love the app Anylist), and, when he started to get super run-off-y, he was challenged to try to walk the rest of the way backwards. That kept him busy. He’s really good so long as I’m constantly giving him “assignments.” Ava was wonderful. Not a peep. She was just happy to be along for the ride. Maybe we’ll even try a trip to the park next.
When I got home, I laid out all of the groceries and took a picture. Looking at these labels will be so interesting in 20 years. I always take photos of what we buy at the farmer’s market every week, but I’ve never taken photos of the grocery stuff before. We usually go to Trader Joe’s, so when we go to our neighborhood store the naughty stuff (Oreos!) always makes it to the cart.
Time for Ava’s bottle after Jonas and I put the groceries away.
Then yoga time. We also hung out with Paul, who ate brunch, talked with Jonas and I, then went off to work.
Funny, I put pajamas back on for this, but never really got photos of me in the actual clothes I wore to the grocery store.
Ava took a morning nap, so I put on a movie for Jonas and did some work and switched over the laundry.
Then Jonas and I worked on a project. I’ve decided to take deep cleaning and decorating one room at a time, and I’m working on our breakfast room this week. I rearranged and attacked it with a box of magic erasers earlier in the week, and worked on laying out a gallery wall today. I traced the stuff onto paper bags, cut out the shapes, and put them up with washi tape.
I’m good at making it feel balanced, but not the measuring and straightening part. So now Jake will go in with a ruler and level before we commit to actually hanging stuff up.
Then I was going to put Jonas down for a nap, but he decided to sit on the potty chair for a half an hour to avoid sleeping, so I filled out my list for the day’s 30 Days of Lists prompt while I waited.
Then it was time to feed Ava. I watched part of Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking in the background.
Then Poppy came over and I hung out with him. He also looked through my Project Life Childhood album.
Eliza got home, and she got to open an awesome box of goodies from our friend Click. It was full of the best stuff. Nerd heaven. Thanks, click!
After Poppy went home, both the little ones were sleeping and Eliza was doing homework, so I did a quick chair reupholstering project. I’ll share that here later today.
Harvey came to pick up Ava and we hung out for awhile. Jonas woke up and climbed on everyone.
I started to feel really awful, so I laid down for a bit after Jake got home.
Then we all teamworked to make Three cheese pizza with kale and sausage for dinner. I picked thyme, shredded cheese, and boiled kale, Paul smooshed sausage, Eliza emptied the dishwasher, and Jonas spread cheese. Jake was in charge of checking on the pizza and taking it out at the right time.
Family meals are the best.
I read books to Jonas and got him in bed.
Then I read a few chapters of Clash of Kings while Eliza got ready for bed, then I read her a chapter of Harry Potter. Jonas got out of bed and joined in for the end of it, and after reading I had to put him back in bed. I sang to him a bit, and he then stayed put.
I texted with Allie a bit, then I finally had time to take a shower (which I intended to do in the early afternoon).
I edited and uploaded the photos for this post.
Jake, Paul, and I settled down to watch Orange is the New black, which we’ve all been doing together every night. Then Jake and I snuggled up and read before bed. Lights out!
That’s a day in my life! Today will be all about Jake.
