Blog Mind Map | Find Your Voice Week 3

Lesson 3 of the FREE Find Your Voice workshop from rukristin papercrafts is all about working out your goals. And if you’ve been around for awhile, you know I’m practically built of those.

At the same time I was working on the FYV coursework, I was also working on a blogging goals assignment for BUILD, an in-depth workshop on BUILDing your online platform from Lemon and Raspberry.

One of the major things I need to do to reach my goals, and something Jake and I have been working hard on, is a new blog design. When we designed this version, we were blogging about much different stuff and had much different goals. And while I’m excited for the cleaner look and the better navigation, one of the things that matters most (and is going to take a million hours) is reorganizing the categories in a way that makes more sense. So, you know, you can actually find stuff in those archives we’ve worked so hard to create.

So I used the Find Your Voice Mind Map Assignment to work on BUILDing a better blog around here. And I did it in a big impact way above my desk. (This is why two classes are better than one.)

I used cards from the Midnight Project Life Kit, printed our logo on a 4×6 card, and then branched out into three major categories based on our tagline “Crafty family of nerds.” Everything we do here can be broken down within those three categories.

I taped up the cards with Freckled Fawn Aqua airmail washi and connected the categories with lines of washi from this My Mind’s Eye Yellow & Gray Washi Set. I love that this looks awesome and won’t ruin the wall, so this can be temporary or long standing.

I stamped the three major categories and then the major sub-categories with Kelly Purkey Plain Jane Alphabet Stamps, which are one of my favorite stamp alphas. I’m not all the way done. We’re still working on some of the subcategories. For instance, the card that says Nerd needs a title that sums up Nerd fandom and Nerd adventure posts, like going to the Maker Faire and Planet Comicon.

For sub categories that needed to be broken down further, I used circles punched from Project Life 3 x 4 Grid Cards. Still need to add some more of those.

Making this blog mind map was the easy part. Re-categorizing is going to be the hard part (especially with how often we link to categories in the archives). But the end result will be so worth it.
