5 Reasons to Use Natural Dyes with Kim of Art Equals Happy

We’re on vacation for the next two weeks, but we’re leaving you in good hands with guest posts everyday AND regular Nerd Nest scheduled posts on weekdays. Today’s guest post is by Kim of Art Equals Happy. She’s a fellow Harry Potter fangirl, cat person, and DIY enthusiast.

Hello Nerd Nest readers. I’m Kim from Art Equals Happy. It’s a pleasure to be here!

I make handspun and naturally dyed wool yarn, and I’m sharing 5 Reasons to Use Natural Dyes today!

1. It’s better for the environment.

Seriously! No chemicals. You’re re-using things (like onion skins!) and there’s little to no waste (just some dirty water, you can water the plants with). Some of the plant dyes can be toxic to humans though, be careful. :]

2. You’ll feel connected to the past.

Probably the best feeling in the world, right? Slowing down and learning to appreciate something our ancestors might have done.

3. It’s a traditional skill, you’ll learn more.

Not only will you learn about plants, acidity and alkaline, water properties, wool properties and light sensitivity- but it’s something that people like William Morris did. It’s a traditional skill and there are some learning processes that only come from doing something like this.

4. It’s unique!

There’s a lot of hand-dyed fibre and wool out there, but there’s not a lot of naturally dyed stuff! The colours are not as ‘neon’ and artificial as acid or other commercial dyes- which personally I love- and that means you’ll be creating different projects than everyone else! And don’t think for a second you’ll be restricted to only a few colours. There is a HUGE rainbow of possibilities out there!

5. FUN!

I like to pretend I’m brewing up a fun witchy potion. By using a big pot, it kind of feels like a cauldron, which is amazing and nerdy. :] Hermione and Slughorn would be proud.
