Having a family recipe book is something that means a lot to me. Family meals are a big part of bonding for my family, and I love the idea of having something that I can hand to my kids when they go off on their own that can bring them a taste of home!
Most of the wonderful things my mother and grandmother made often were not written down. They may have been based on some recipe in their recipe box, but that original recipe was tweaked and twisted beyond recognition by the time the dishes reached my taste buds! I’ve had so many conversations with my mom during which she tells me recipe instructions like, “add in the next ingredient until it’s the right color.” It’s wonderful and amazing to get to a point where you can cook by taste, appearance, and feel, but it’s hard to pass on knowledge to budding cooks that way! So I’m setting out to record my recipes in what I hope becomes a treasured family heirloom.
I don’t have a ton of recipes to fill the book with yet (this project will be a labor of love), but I do have plenty of recipes printed from the internet or clipped from magazines to add in too. Eventually, I’ll separate these out into two separate binders, but for now I’m glad to have my recipes sorted instead of in a gigantic pile.
