Savory Sunday Vol 38

Here’s our meal plan and reality for last week:

The Reality

This week went nothing like we planned, because we didn’t make it to the grocery store over the weekend. That always ruins things.

Salad & d'Bronx

Sunday we picked up a pizza and salad from our favorite local place, d’Bronx.

Monday we still had no food in the house, so it was Chipotle for the grown-ups and leftovers for the kids.

Beef Stroganoff

Tuesday my mom and little sister were over for Beef Stroganoff, brussels sprouts, and green beans (I stole my mom’s car for a bit to do a small amount of grocery shopping).

Hamburgers w/ Homemade Buns

Wednesday my mom and sister were back (my mom helped me make the kids’ Halloween costumes), and my ex-step-dad came over too (Love that we’re still a family: reminds me of the Clueless quote, “You divorce wives, not children.”) Jake’s little sister and step-mom also randomly dropped in. I love days that are filled with family and laughter in our house. Anyway, we had swiss-mushroom hamburgers with homemade buns, baked beans, and fries. My mom actually made a good majority of the food (thanks, mom!) and she taught me a bun forming technique that makes them all pretty and uniform in size.

Bootleg Chicken Fried Chicken

Thursday we did a bootleg version of chicken fried chicken, which is really just frozen chicken strips with mashed potatoes and homemade country gravy. (I add fresh parmesan cheese to the gravy; it’s soooo much yummier). We had corn and green beans with that. Eliza’s been constantly requesting canned green beans lately, so they’ve been making a lot of appearances.

Chicken Pot Pie

Friday we had another big family dinner. We made two Chicken pot pies and a few appetizers.

Jake got a picture of me making the pies. I love in-progress / hands-doing-things photos. We need to capture more of those.

Stuffed Jalapeno

For the appetizers, we stole Jake’s step-mom’s recipe for stuffed mushrooms and jalapeños. For the filling, you just mix cream cheese, a bit of garlic salt, and “real” bacon bits (the soft kind, not the crunchy kind). For the jalapeños, you cut them lengthwise and remove the ribs and seeds before filling.

For the mushrooms, you wash / dry them, remove the stems, and fill the caps.

I just bake them at whatever temperature the other stuff I’m cooking is at; take ’em out when the cream cheese starts to get golden brown.

Mac Daddy from McCoy's

Saturday ended up being a date night, and Jake and I went to McCoy’s, another neighborhood favorite. It’s like an upscale Irish bar. They even brew their own beer! We don’t drink, but we still think that’s super cool. Their homemade root beer IS amazing, though.

We had The Mac Daddy, which is this creamy baked concoction with jumbo shells, mozzarella, cheddar, provolone, parmesan bread crumbs, peas, and bacon. It’s the sort of food that makes you literally make yummy noises while very, very slowly pulling your spoon from your mouth so your lips can be in contact with the yumminess for the maximum available time. It’s also WAY to rich to eat the full serving, so Jake and I split it and got an appetizer, too.

FYI: That’s one of our favorite tricks to knock $3-$7 from the restaurant bill: an appetizer + split entree is always still too much food, and is much cheaper than two entrees.


We also made chocolate pumpkin muffins this week (recipe courtesy of Sharmon). Everyone around here loves them; they disappear FAST.

Roasted Pumpkin

We used Roasted Pumpkin instead of canned this time, it was amazing. I’m finding this is true of everything I try with roasted pumpkin vs. canned. There will be a lot more pumpkin coming our way next week, too.
