Sunday we set the precedent for going off menu by going out to eat at d’Bronx. We didn’t have time to go to the grocery store last weekend, so we grabbed a pizza from our favorite neighborhood place instead.
Monday we had guests for dinner, so we made our uber cheap and yummy Eggplant Parmesan.
Tuesday we grilled brats and zucchini strips and served ‘em up with cantaloupe and fries. Also, we ran out of dishwashing detergent, and we all used kid plates rather than wash anything by hand. We’re that lazy.
Wednesday was Independence Day, so we had a big picnic at my Dad’s. We brought Potato Salad.
We also brought strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries tossed in lime juice and honey. We can’t get enough of this. We freeze the leftovers to for smoothies.
Eliza was kidnapped by Jake’s dad and step-mom, and we didn’t feel like cooking for two (plus we had errands to run anyway). We went to our favorite non-authentic Mexican place: Manny’s. We split a frito burrito, which is deep-fried and smothered in monterey jack queso. Mmmmmm. Most of the time, restaurant portion sizes are crazy, so Jake and I can split a plate and eat out for under $20.00 almost every time.
Friday Jonas was stolen away too, so we had our first of two childless nights. We made our favorite Caribbean Jerk Salad with our Homemade Rub and snuggled up for a Game of Thrones marathon. And then I reorganized my patterned paper. We’re so exciting.
Saturday we were still sucked into Game of Thrones, but at least we were productive making stuff for the shop during. We looked up and realized that we were hungry (good shows will do that to you) so we decided on a quick date to Fric and Frac, a neighborhood bar and grill. We’re still not certain if we vote Fric and Frac or Westport Flea Market as the best burgers in KC. I think maybe if we could combine elements of the burgers from both places we’d come out with the best burger on the planet. I had the Red Neck Burger, which has barbecue sauce, bacon, jalapenos, melty cheese, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, and tomato. There’s so much going on in that burger that every bite is a confusing flavor explosion. Jake gets a cheeseburger with bacon and cream cheese. We split fries. It was nice to be in a restaurant without Jonas crawling all over us, but we spent the whole time wishing the kids were there.
This week we also made bruchetta for lunch one day (we made the lazy sort with fresh bread + balsamic vinegar + Trader Joe’s bruchetta mix + marinated baby mozzarella + our very own basil). And I succumbed to my carmel vanilla latte craving and went to our favorite neighborhood coffeeshop, Filling Station (there are like 12 coffeeshops around here). Coffee is my very biggest vice, and I’d drink three lattes a day if my kidneys and our bank account could handle it. I’ve been really good about making it a special treat since I figured out how much it was costing us in March.
This week we barely followed our menu because we didn’t end up grocery shopping until towards the end of the week. That just made the meal planning for the next week earlier. The stuff we didn’t get to moved down on the queue.
