Fric and Frac's

Sunday we went on a nice long walk through our neighborhood and ended up at Fric and Frac. Our friend Matt, who also lives in our neighborhood, holds that Fric and Frac is the best burger in Kansas City. We think Westport Flea Market takes the cake. So we went to do a test. And oh man, the first time we went there must have been the most off day ever. Because Sunday was BAM WOW AMAZING.

Jake got a burger with bacon and cream cheese. That sounds crazy, but bacon and cream cheese were made for each other. We also like those together on pizza. I got the Red Neck Burger, which has bacon, grilled onions, jalapeños, barbecue sauce, and hot pepper cheese. Oh my gosh, there was so much deliciousness going on in every bite of that burger that I couldn’t even tell what yummy flavors were going on where. Serious mouth party. Long story short, we’re all going to have to go to Fric and Frac and Westport Flea market back to back to judge properly.

Mac and Cheese with Brussels Sprouts

Monday was for easy food, so we had Velveeta mac & cheese (which we love, but try not to have very often). I made green beans for the picky people and brussels sprouts for me. We had applesauce too.

Italian Sausage with Potatoes and Peppers

Tuesday we had Italian Sausage with Potatoes and Peppers, which is one of our warm weather staples.

Grammy's Mexican Chicken

Wednesday we had Grammy’s Mexican Chicken, something my grandma always used to make. She was the queen of feeding large amounts of people for small amounts of money. This recipe shows this talent off well. Matt ended up coming over for dinner.

We swapped Wednesday and Thursday, because Jake’s brother Nick decided to come over on Thursday and he really likes Chicken Apple Chili. (We also used one rotisserie chicken for both Wednesday and Thursday’s dinners.)

Creamy Chicken Apple Chili

Thursday was Chicken Apple Chili. I love autumn flavor profiles: I keep them going all year. This is served with tortillas and shredded cheddar cheese. I couldn’t taste anything because my sinuses were all full of grossness, but Nick, Jake, and Eliza voted that it was good, as always.

Baked Italian Chicken & Bakers

Friday my mom came over and we had baked chicken marinated in Italian dressing, baked potatoes, and peas!

Fran's

Saturday we were going to eat at home, but through some bad time management, ended up not having enough time to cook between dropping the kids off at their grandparents’ and going to the roller derby. We went to Fran’s after the derby with our friends Harvey and Lisa.

Fran’s is sort of an upscale diner.

We’re in love with the Morning Glory, which we split. It’s a waffle topped with bacon, eggs, apple slices, and honey maple syrup. It makes me way to buy a waffle maker so I can have them at home!

Eliza's Croissant Sandwich Invention

Also of note this week: we had Eliza’s original recipe invention for lunch. The layering is very important to her: it’s a croissant cut in half with butter spread across the bottom half, then shredded colby jack cheese, then scrambled eggs. She was so proud to help make her own recipe!

Week in the Life 2012 | Tuesday

I also have to mention the awesome flower watermelon carving Jake did last week for a work picnic. And it was his first try! I’ll bet we’ll be seeing a lot more fruit caving from him in the near future. He’s already reshaped some cheap knives with his Dremel so he can be more detailed next time.

Another delicious week of family meals!

Here’s what’s on the menu for next week!
