Jessica

My best friend Jessica and her friends Steph and Jackii arrived at 7:00 A. M. this morning! HAPPY QUARTER OF A CENTURY JESSICA!!! (Today’s her birthday.)

Steph and Jackii, tired from the 8-9 hour drive from Denver, CO to Kansas City, MO slept while Jessica (who slept in the car) and I caught up, at d’Bronx pizza and lazed about.

It started snowing big, beautiful snowflakes, which is crazy because it was almost 80 degrees here yesterday. We joked that the weather followed them here.

The girls are walking around the Plaza right now while I wait on Eliza to get home from school. After Jake gets home from work, we’re heading to Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ. Then we’ll hit up our friend JT’s art show at the Apex in the Crossroads, where we’ll also check out the galleries for First Fridays. After the art madness, we’re dropping Jake and the kids off at home for a girl’s night out in the Power and Light District. (Side note: Power & Light isn’t awesome; it’s like the Times Square or the Statue of Liberty in New York: somewhere to avoid if you’re a local. The only people from Kansas City that hang there are from the ‘burbs, even though it’s downtown.)

Tomorrow night we’re having a ton of friends over for my famous chicken tikka masala. Then we’re headed to the River Market for this month’s Make Out Club Art Show. Then we’ll come back to our hood for a bar walk in Westport Square (my mom’s watching the kids; Jake and I will be drinking pop at said bars).

Sunday Steph and Jackii head back to Denver, but Jessica will still be in town. We’re spending some bestie alone time on 18th and Vine, KC’s historic Jazz district.

This weekend’s going to play like a “Best of Kansas City” record.

Speaking of records, Jessica brought me a present even though it’s her birthday. Our song (yes, we have a song) is “To The End” by My Chemical Romance. Mostly for the line “I won’t go down by myself, but I’ll go down with my friends.” The song starts out, “In the middle of a gunfight” and we’ve toyed with the idea of getting Andy Worhol revolver tattoos with the lyric. We decided against the tattoo (we’re not big gun lovers). So she brought me a print of it with the lyrics instead! Which is funny, because I’m working on a painting of the exact same thing for her. Which will probably be ready by my birthday in July. So we’ll be even steven.

Great minds, huh? This is why we’re best friends.
