We are collectors. It’s dangerous. It’s bad for our budget. It’s bad for Jake’s dream of a minimalist household (hah!). Most of our collections are already obnoxious. But some of them are just budding.
According to Lisa Congdon, author of Collection a Day, if you have three of something, it counts as a collection. So we’re counting this trio of mugs. It’s more than just numbers: it’s an itch. It’s knowing that, if we see another one at a thrift store or antique shop, it’ll be in our cart without a second thought.
Why are we drawn to plastic character mugs? We like collections that are usable. We want our kids to actually be able to use this collection. We love that they are plastic, so we can just throw them into a big low-down drawer so Eliza can grab one and help herself to a mug ‘o water. Some of these three fall a bit short of the 20-year vintage mark (the ninja turtles mug and the Power Rangers mug are from the ’90s), but we’re not collecting them because they’re vintage. We’re collecting them because they depict shows we watched when we were kids. Thanks to the wonder of Netflix instant, Eliza loves these shows we love as well.
Jonas likes that he can bang them against things and throw them without us taking them. He’s a tiny distractive force of nature. The Charlie Brown Aladdin thermos has spent a lot of time in Jonas’s diaper bag, filled with soapy water with which to wet washcloth “wipes” for his cloth diapers when we go to outdoor events. We also used it for mixing rice cereal when he was bitty.
Eliza likes that they have handles, so she can pretend she’s drinking coffee like Mom.
We like that Eliza is so interested in what we liked when we were kids. She wants to know what we did, read, and watched so she can do, read, and watch it too! E is awesome.
We favor these over vintage character glasses, because character glasses made from the 1960’s to the 1980’s were often made with lead based paint or posed choking hazards. And they break.
We’ll be looking for more mugs to add to this collection. Here are the characters we’d be most excited to find: She-ra, Spiderman, X-men, My Little Pony, Care Bears, Transformers, Strawberry Shortcake, and anything 90’s Nickelodeon.
Do you have a tiny collection that’s just starting to grow?
